February 3 @ 10:00 am - 12:30 pm $110
  • This event has passed.

Date: February 3rd 2024

Time: 10:00AM-12:30PM (Optional Japanese Tea Garden Tour CANCELLED due to rain)

Participant fees: Adult (Ages 18+) – $110

Location: County Fair Building, Garden Club Room

Optional: Take an optional tour of the Japanese Tea Garden in advance of the workshop! If you would like to participate, please meet at the entrance to the JTG at 9:05am – the tour will last 45 minutes and the docent will then walk participants to the County Fair Building for the workshop.

Our morning begins with a docent guided tour of the Japanese Tea Garden in advance of taking this Japanese heritage craft workshop. After walking the beautiful grounds of the JTG, join artist and maker Robert Mahar in a playful introduction to suminagashi, a Japanese marbling technique that creates beautifully muted patterns of color to be transferred onto paper and fabric. Perfectly suited for beginners, participants will learn best practices for working with these specifically formulated floating inks and creative ways to manipulate them on the surface of a water bath. The resulting marbled designs will be captured on a variety of papers and silk handkerchiefs–and instruction will include discussion of the numerous ways you can incorporate these marbled materials into future projects.

This class will be held in the Recreation Room of the County Fair Building – located adjacent to the main entrance of the San Francisco Botanical Garden.

Materials: All materials are included and will be provided to participants when they arrive for the workshop. Each student will receive, and may take home at the end of class, an individual set of marbling inks, brushes, water pan, a variety of paper and silk handkerchiefs. Please wear clothing and shoes that you won’t mind getting splashed with water and (potentially, but unlikely!) stained with ink.
About the instructor: Robert Mahar is a California-based artist and educator who teaches thoughtfully researched and developed hands-on projects based in historical craft traditions. He’s also a proud contestant alumni, and subsequent associate producer, on NBC’s crafting competition show Making It with Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman. With an education in studio arts and art history, he has worked in a variety of creative fields including 13 years as an appraiser of modern and contemporary art.
