Winter Lights Request for Proposal (Closed)
We are excited to share a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a lighting partner to help us create an enchanting winter lights installation at the Gardens of Golden Gate Park.
Our aim is to develop a unique winter lights installation that embodies the mission and brand of the Gardens and is authentic to our local community. We hope to create a magical atmosphere that will captivate visitors of all ages and invite visitors to explore the beauty of the Gardens after hours. We envision the first year of this event taking place from mid-November 2024 through early January 2025. We are open to multi-year proposals.

Because of the limited timeline of this RFP we are unable to accommodate staff-led site visits, RFP submitters may arrange for admission to the Gardens to review the sites on their own. Please contact jchan@gggp.org to arrange for free admission to the garden. During your self-guided site visit, please stay on paths and lawns.
Specific art installations and locations do not need to be defined in the proposal, after selecting a partner we hope to work collaboratively to refine elements, their placements and final budget. Approval for final placement of any element will depend on installation requirements, accessibility, and potential impact to the museum quality living collection of plants.
Right now, our focus is on finding a partner who will produce the entire activation. Once we have contracted a partner, local artists may contact us about potential artistic collaboration within the show. That would happen after the RFP process is finished. Please feel free to contact us after the selection process is complete.
Considerations for access and inclusivity are part of our conversations and selection process with vendor partners and RPD as we work on further plans. We hope to share more with the community after the partner selection process has been completed.
We are listening to all concerns about preserving dark skies and limiting disturbance to wildlife. These considerations are part of our conversations and selection process with vendor partners and San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department as we work on further plans.
The installation will be temporary in duration (Mid-November to early January) and turned off at a consistent time each night. Once a designer is on board, the proposed light display will be reviewed by City staff.
The Gardens of Golden Gate Park are looking to net a min. $500,000. We will split that amount between the Gardens and RPD.
