Weavin’ Nature: Coiled Pine Needle Basketry with Raffia
Sunday, March 22, 2026
10am-4pm
San Francisco Botanical Garden — Redwood Grove (meet at Main Gate)
About the Program
In this workshop, explore cultures — both inside and outside the U.S. — that practice coiled basketry, and learn why this weaving tradition appears in communities worldwide.
You will learn the basics of how to sustainably collect, clean, and prepare pine needles. Then you will be taught how to create a coiled pine needle basket using raffia as the binding thread. Start by forming the center base, then build the walls, and finish with a secure closure (if you so choose). Have fun experimenting with different stitching fibers such as raffia, artificial sinew, and waxed thread. You will also learn two different coiling techniques so you can find a rhythm and style that feels most natural to you.
Every participant will leave with a new weaving skill and a deeper appreciation for the artistry behind coiled baskets. Bundles of pine needles will be available for anyone who wants to continue weaving at home.
About the Instructor
I’m Abeni ‘Abi’ Pierson, a Chicagoland native who escaped the cold winters and has been living in the Bay Area for the past seven years. During the 2020 lockdown, I turned to the therapeutic practice of weaving and quickly became passionate about keeping this ancient craft alive. Through my workshops and handcrafted pieces, I strive to spark conversations and preserve the language of weaving for future generations.
Pine trees grow in nearly every part of the world, making this craft accessible to all. My mission is to reconnect people with nature through sustainable, hands-on creativity — honoring both the materials and the ecosystems they come from.
