Plant Photography in San Francisco Botanical Garden;
or wherever else you might find yourself
Workshop with Mark Citret

Photographing plants: from the stems to the leaves to the flowers, presents its own set of
challenges. Not all of these challenges are photographic. The first of these that ought to cross the
photographer’s mind, whether consciously or unconsciously, is, “What is it about this plant/
flower/tree that moves me?” Having a sense of the answer to that question, again, consciously
or unconsciously, can be the difference between making a photograph that simply shows what a
particular plant looks like, and making a photograph that conveys something of what a
particular plant makes you feel.

We all know what it is to be moved by plants that we love. The focus of this workshop will be learning how to make your botanical photographs go beyond a description of the subject, to photographs that convey something of the wonder and awe that the subject inspires in you.

This workshop is open to all levels of photographic experience. The only prerequisite would be
knowing how your camera operates. That covers everything from the camera in your phone, to
a DSLR, or a film camera. Whatever your camera of choice, the workshop will explore how you
may do a better job of capturing what it is that you love in the botanical world.

Materials Needed:

Bring a camera of your choice and know how it operates.
