About the Program

Step away from screens and into the art of pine needle basketry, an ancient craft with a modern purpose, during this 2-day hands on workshop in the Botanical Garden. Using fallen pine needles, this eco-friendly practice transforms natural materials into stunning handmade baskets — while fostering mindfulness, creativity, and connection.

Program Benefits:

  • Sustainable & Eco-Friendly – Turn natural debris into beautiful, functional art while reducing waste and helping prevent wildfires.
  • Mindful & Meditative – Experience the calming rhythm of weaving, encouraging patience and relaxation.
  • Social & Screen-Free – A hands-on, communal activity that fosters conversation and creativity.
  • Nature Appreciation – Deepen your connection to the environment through eco-conscious crafting.

About the Instructor

I’m Abeni ‘Abi’ Pierson, a Chicagoland native who escaped the cold winters and has been living in the Bay Area for the past seven years. During the 2020 lockdown, I turned to the therapeutic practice of weaving and quickly became passionate about keeping this ancient craft alive. Through my workshops and handcrafted pieces, I strive to spark conversations and preserve the language of weaving for future generations.

Pine trees grow in nearly every part of the world, making this craft accessible to all. My mission is to reconnect people with nature through sustainable, hands-on creativity — honoring both the materials and the ecosystems they come from.
