The Green Revolution Will Not Be Televised: Film Screening with Bennett Olupo
Bennett Olupo is delighted to share his documentary focusing on community gardens’ role in empowering Minneapolis residents while providing them with joy. These spaces have always been important for increasing food access, community organizing, and building a sense of camaraderie. The murder of George Floyd, the Global Racial Reckoning, and the Justice Department’s findings on civil rights violations by the Minneapolis Police Department and the City of Minneapolis heightened people’s awareness of why these spaces are essential. People share their stories about the fallout of 2020 and how the quest for food sovereignty has affected their lives since then. Although the gardeners are amid challenging circumstances, the film highlights the residents’ happiness and ambitions for a better future.
Most of the filming occurred in the summer of 2023 in North and South Minneapolis and centers Plant-Grow-Share and Project Sweetie Pie. These two organizations operate community gardens. Their efforts make stewardship opportunities and food more accessible to Minneapolis residents. Film length is 20 minutes, followed by a brief discussion and Q&A.
